And if we were the worse for wear after the drink.....or could afford it , there was the trusty old Black Cab especially if you wanted to get home quicker Of course, with Uber and co and the family run round the clock mini van services we've seen for many years , they have a lot more competition these days Remember all the lines of Black Cabs at the old taxi ranks.......Stephenson Place, Broad Street , Hurst Street etc.....and Snow Hill near the famous old tea wagon where you could get a warm bap or a burger and a nice piping hot cuppa tea at 2 or 3 in the morning **thumbup Oh ! Happy Days they were Lost a lot of change in the seats of those Black Cabs over the years though .....never did a 'Runner' though.....cheapskates Posted Image |

Other memories of the old days Remember when you could turn up for a flight at an Airport sometimes as little as half an hour before it departed ....and still get on.....no chance of that today Pinball machines Tape recorders and cassette players Mr Whippy ice cream vans and the blaring music  was always annoying when you were trying to watch something good on TV Remember those mobile greengrocers and their vans .....you could buy all your veggies and spuds on the street corner New Zealand lamb ....when I was back there in June, the wife of a mate of mine said it was harder to get these days The old makes and models of cars .......The 1100, The Montego , the Allegro , Hillman, Humber, Wolseley , Vauxhall Viva, Triumph Stag and Herald , The Ford Anglia, The Ford Zephyr, , The Ford Zodiac (a fancy Anglia :P )The Ford Escort , the Ford Cortina (how may different models did they make over 20 years or so ??) , Ford Granada When a pint was less 50p ......a gallon of petrol was 38p back in the mid 70's .....yes, the good old gallon , we had pints and quarts as well ......I don't like some of this metric stuff they use today.....we often used 'Fahrenheit' as a measure of the air temperature as well However the money is easier being decimal, prior to the early 70's we had the 240 old pennies and 20 shillings in a pound method ........but you'll surely recall the three penny bits and the tanners (or sixpence) , the shilling (5p) and Half a Crown (12.5p) ....it's a shame they got rid of pound notes but let's be honest a pound don't buy you much these days ......the US dollar is worth even less however the Americans still use paper 'dollar' bills.....they tried coins once (the ones produced can still be used as currency) but there was a huge protest from the public The old Ten Bob Note (50p today) Posted Image |

The one who used to come round our end was known as John the Van. When he parked at the end of the street he'd hang out the back and shout "Cigarettes" and all the kids would shout back "and matches".. Excellent thread by the way. Top read. Edited by Stretton, Sep 11 2016, 05:35 AM.
